In 1795 an act for the establishment of an academy in the town of New Salem by the name of New Salem Academy was passed by the Massachusetts House of Representatives. The Academy was established for the purpose of “promoting piety, religion, and morality…and in such of the liberal arts and sciences as the Trustees shall direct.” One of the founding trustees was John Goldsbury, Esq.
